The four layouts that actually get built
Textbooks list eight or nine retail store layouts. Across 2,500+ fit-outs we have built four, and most stores over 1,500 sq ft are a combination of two of them. If you are deciding how to plan a store, these are the options.
1. Grid
Parallel aisles with gondolas or shelving runs, a checkout bank at the front. Maximum product per square foot, easiest to stock and navigate, least atmosphere. Supermarkets, pharmacies, hardware, stationery, convenience. Customers move fast and buy from a list; the layout should not slow them.
2. Loop (racetrack)
A defined main path, usually a contrasting floor finish, runs around a central block of islands and back to the entrance, with wall bays on the perimeter. Every customer passes every zone. Fashion, footwear, department stores, larger lifestyle formats. It costs more fixtures per sq ft than a spine and less than a grid, and it needs at least 1,000 sq ft to work; below that the loop is just a corridor.
3. Free-flow
Fixtures placed asymmetrically, no prescribed path, generous open floor. Lowest product density, highest dwell time and highest average ticket per item. Boutiques, jewellery, premium eyewear, brand flagships. The risk is dead corners: without a path, anything behind the customer's natural sightline from the entrance is not visited. Free-flow depends on lighting and a strong back wall to pull people through.
4. Spine
One main aisle from entrance to back wall with departments either side, sometimes ending at a hero display or the cash counter. The default for long, narrow high-street units (a 15 ft × 60 ft shop is a spine whether you like it or not). Works for electronics, mobile, sportswear, multi-category stores; combine with a mini-loop at the back if the unit widens.
The numbers: aisles, fixtures, zones
These are the planning rules we apply on the first sketch, before anyone opens CAD. They are fit-out practice for Indian retail, not code; local fire and accessibility norms override them where stricter.

Three zones exist regardless of layout. The decompression zone is the first 1.5–3 m inside the door; customers do not see merchandise there, so keep it open or give it one hero moment. The power wall is the first wall the customer's eye lands on after decompression (in India, usually the right-hand wall, since most people turn right); put the highest-margin or newest range there. The back wall is the destination that pulls people through the store; it should be the brightest, most branded surface in the room, and in a small store it is where the fitting rooms or the cash counter belong.
Fixture percentages also drive budget directly. A grid's 12 gondolas are cheap individually and expensive in aggregate; a free-flow boutique's four themed islands are the reverse. We show what those fixtures cost per sq ft of front elevation in retail store interior design cost in India.

Small stores: 300–600 sq ft
Most Indian high-street and mall units are in this range, and most layout advice online assumes 3,000 sq ft. In a small store the rules invert: you cannot afford a decompression zone of 3 m, so make it 1.5 m and make it count with one lit hero fixture. You cannot run a loop, so run a spine and make the back wall the destination. Put the cash counter where it does not block the sightline from the door to the back wall, usually two-thirds of the way in on one side, never dead centre at the front.
Wall bays do the heavy lifting: in a 450 sq ft unit with 2.9 m ceilings, 50 running feet of full-height perimeter bays hold more stock than any floor fixture arrangement, and they leave the floor open, which makes the store feel larger than it is. Keep floor fixtures below 1.2 m so the walls stay visible. Mirrors on the side wall opposite the power wall double the perceived width in a 12–15 ft wide unit; it is the cheapest sq ft you will ever buy.
Five layout mistakes we fix most often
- Merchandise in the decompression zone. The rack at the door is walked past, every time. Move it 2 m in.
- Cash counter facing the entrance. It reads as a barrier and it hides the back wall. Side it.
- Aisles under 0.9 m. Customers will not bend to a bottom shelf if someone might brush past. Lose one fixture, sell more from the rest.
- Dead right-rear corner in free-flow. No path, no light, no reason to go there. Put the fitting room, the mirror wall or a lit feature in it.
- Fixtures designed before the layout. The brand's beautiful 2.4 m island does not fit a 12 ft wide unit with a column. Layout first, fixture drawings second, always.

The layout is the cheapest thing to change on paper and the most expensive to change on site, because every trade is built on it. What are the main types of retail store layout?

For Indian retail we plan 1.2 m minimum for main aisles and 0.9 m for secondary aisles between fixtures; 1.5 m or more where trolleys, prams or wheelchairs are expected. Narrower than 0.9 m and customers stop browsing the lower shelves.

As a planning rule from fit-out practice: a grid layout carries roughly 35–45% of floor area as fixtures, a loop 25–35%, and a free-flow boutique 15–25%. A 1,000 sq ft fashion store on a loop layout typically holds 60–80 running feet of wall bays plus four to six floor fixtures.
